How to Make Your Own Lava Lamp
We all love watching the blobs of
color floating in a lava lamps. The bubbles that swirl around. They stretch, breaking into small
bubbles. Then we watch as little blobs hit bigger blobs. Then the blob gets even bigger. Finally, the
blob breaks apart and starts all over again.
It is fun to watch the lamps, but sometimes it
cost too much to buy a lamp. So why not make your own?
Here’s what you will
need:
A clean 1 liter clear soda bottle
¾
cup of water
Vegetable Oil
Fizzing tablets (such
as Alka Seltzer)
Food coloring
Follow these steps to make your own lava lamp:
Pour the water into the bottle.
Use a funnel, or a measuring cup and pour
the vegetable oil into the bottle until it is almost full. It may take awhile for the oil and water
to separate.
Add 10 drops of food coloring to the bottle (pick your
favorite color if you like). The drops will go through the oil and mix with the water
below.
Now, break a seltzer tablet in two and put the half tablet in the
bottle. Watch it sink to the bottom and wait for the blobs to begin!
When it
stops working just add another tablet piece. If you really want the full lava lamp effect, shine a
flashlight through the bottom of the bottle.
